JSE-listed Polish property company Echo Polska Properties (EPP) has declared a distribution growth of 12% apiece to 5.82c for the six months ended June 30, compared with 5.19c in the first half of 2017, placing the company on track to deliver full year dividends of between 11.6 and 11.8c apiece. EPP’s results show distributable earnings increased by 32% to €48.3-million and that net property income growth increased by 45% to €66.2-million.

The South African Institution of Civil Engineering (Saice) has decided to part ways with its CEO, after Manglin Pillay penned a controversial opinion piece on women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (Stem) careers. Following outraged reactions to the article, titled ‘Out on a Rib’, by various industry members, including Aurecon and Women in Engineering, the Saice board handled the matter internally and accepted an apology from Pillay, initially confirming that would remain Saice CEO.

Ghana will have to use alternative sources to pay back China’s Sinohydro Corp. for $2-billion in infrastructure if the revenue from an earmarked bauxite project is insufficient to meet installments. Sinohydro agreed to a deal with the West African nation in May to build bridges, roads, hospitals and housing as part of the government of President Nana Akufo-Addo’s plans to lift economic growth. In return, Ghana undertook to repay the Beijing-based company with the proceeds of refined bauxite sales from a plant that is due to be commissioned and completed within three years.

Congo mining revenues triple in H1; oil revenues fall by a third

The International Trade Centre (ITC) on Monday urged Zambia's small and medium enterprises to improve packaging standards to make their products more competitive on international markets and also called for more investment into local packaging centres for agri-food processors. Speaking at the opening of the World Export Development Forum in the capital Lusaka, ITC deputy executive director Dorothy Tembo said agri-food and agri-business sectors, which contribute the most to the formal and informal economy, faced stiff competition from imported processed and packaged foods.

Real estate investment trust Fortress has secured telecoms and services provider Vodacom as a new tenant at its Louwlardia logistics park development, in Centurion, Gauteng, on a five-year lease, with the option to renew for a further five years. Vodacom will occupy a 17 000 m2 warehouse at Louwlardia from November 1, which it will use as a central storage facility for the equipment used to support and maintain its mobile network.

The Presidency is to lead a Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) “Plenary meeting” involving major sectors of South African government and society, Science and Technology Minister (Ms) MT Kubayi-Ngubane told the media on Monday. No date for the meeting was given. “South Africa needs to set its innovation agenda at the highest level of government and business so that all actors pursue the same objectives and pool resources where possible,” she said. “The Presidency will therefore chair an STI Plenary meeting, involving business leaders, academic experts in the field of STI, government departments that have a focus on STI, and leaders from civil society. Among other matters, the STI Plenary will discuss STI priorities.” The Minister was publicly launching the Department of Science and Technology’s draft White Paper on Science, Technology and Innovation. This is intended to replace its original White Paper on Science and Technology, adopted in 1996.

Climate change is freeing up new trade routes in some areas, while increasing the risk of ice in others. There was another milestone for Arctic shipping in early 2018 when a specially designed liquid natural gas tanker became the first commercial ship to travel the Northern Sea Route in winter and without the assistance of an ice breaker.
